Tips of the Trade: set up files using this color paper and white ink technology checklist:

  • Files should be created in a desktop publishing application like InDesign, Illustrator or Quark.
  • Create a new swatch, set to “spot color” and name it “White” (this is case sensitive). You can adjust sliders to 100% cyan so you can see what in your file will be white.
  • Apply the swatch to anything you would like to be printed in White.
  • Do not create a background color in the file, if you do for design/preview purposes, then delete it before submitting for printing.
  • If you are using the white ink process to back up a color photo or vector, create a shape of the image and fill it with the White swatch. Place the shape directly over the object that will be getting backed with white ink. In the attributes of the shape, click on “overprint fill.”
  • If you are importing a shape from Illustrator, make sure the attribute of “overprint fill” is selected before importing. You will not be able to select it in InDesign.
  • Some programs, like InDesign and Illustrator will allow doing an “Overprint Preview” in the view window.
